Front-load or top-load washer: Which one is right for you?
Whether you live alone, as a couple, or with family, washing machines are an integral part of our routine. We take their presence so much for granted that we forget how much they simplify our daily lives. But when it comes time to shop for a new washing machine, we quickly realize that the choice is anything but obvious.
Before even considering brand and model, you're probably asking yourself what type of washing machine to buy? Should it be a top-loader or a front-loader? A "traditional" washer or a front-loading washer? What type of washer truly suits you?
To help you make your choice, we've listed the advantages and disadvantages of both types of washing machines.
Top-load or front-load your laundry?
Top-loading washing machines (or vertical loading) make it easy to load and unload laundry. Only items at the bottom of the tub can be more difficult to retrieve, depending on your height or the height of the washer.
Front-loading washers (or front loaders) will require you to bend down more often, especially if you opt for a compact model. However, all your laundry will be within reach.
What is the dedicated space in your home for your washer?
The available space and the layout of your home can already determine your choice.
If you want to place your washer in the kitchen, under a countertop, or plan to use it as an extension of your countertop, a front-load washer will be a much better option for you.
Is your home small or are you looking to save space? Front-load washers have the advantage of being stackable with a stacking kit. Depending on the floor you live on and especially your type of staircase, you could also consider purchasing a stacked laundry unit (also called a module, laundry center, or combo).
Are you lucky and have no space constraints? Loading is not an issue for you, and you're still wondering which type of washer to choose?
Let's move on to the advantages and disadvantages of front-load and top-load washers...
The advantages of buying a front-load washer
Larger load capacity
The washing mechanism specific to this type of appliance is one of its main strengths. It involves tumbling action. Concretely, this means your laundry is constantly moving, tumbled by the action of the drum. A front-load washer therefore does not need an agitator (a type of "cylinder") in the middle of its tub to stir the water. This means you benefit from a larger load capacity and these washers can operate with very little water.
A good compromise for the environment
We often hear the term "high efficiency" to describe front-loading washing machines. Even though this term refers more specifically to the type of detergent (HE "High Efficiency" detergent) you should use with this type of machine, it is true that a front-load washer is very energy-efficient. It uses little water, little electricity, and therefore little detergent if you use a quality detergent.
Are you familiar with the Calculate Appliance Consumption tool offered by Hydro-Québec? It will help you determine the electricity consumption of appliances based on 3 criteria (appliance type, Hydro-Québec rate, and appliance usage).
A wider choice of wash programs
For most appliance companies, the front-load washer is considered a "high-end" product. It generally comes with numerous cycles and a wide range of options. If you have synthetic, delicate, white, heavily stained laundry, etc., you will have a dedicated program for it. A wider choice of cycles also means better energy efficiency with a cycle that best adapts to your load.
The front-load washer: not an appliance for everyone?
A washing mechanism to master
Its very reduced water volume will be a problem if you use, for example, reusable diapers. The mechanics of these washers always require you to adapt your load to the correct wash cycle. Each cycle has a minimum and maximum operating weight. For a small load, for example, select quick wash or delicate. For a large load, "bulky items" or "heavy duty" will be more appropriate. Remember to balance the weight of the laundry inside the tub, especially for heavy items; an unbalanced load (e.g., several t-shirts with ONE large bath towel) will cause vibrations, and therefore a noisy washer.
Also, remember to check the type of flooring you have. A "soft" or "uneven" floor will not be optimal for a washer that tends to spin very quickly, especially during the spin cycle. You probably don't want your whole neighborhood to know when you're washing your dirty underwear!
The thorny budget question
When it comes time to shop for a new "appliance," one of the first questions to ask is about the budget. Even though the price gap has narrowed over the years, a front-load washer is still more expensive than a traditional washer. The same goes for repairs... A front-loader particularly contains electronic parts that tend to be more expensive than their mechanical counterparts. Paying more for a front-loader, however, allows for savings during use (water, detergent, electricity, better spinning, and therefore shorter drying time, etc.).
Avoidable odor problems
Whether or not you've already used a front-load washer, you've probably heard about odor problems? About having to leave the door ajar? Well, that's not related to the washer but rather to the detergent you use. The use or non-use of a quality HE (High Efficiency) detergent is crucial in the appearance or non-appearance of bad odors.
Top-loading washer: its advantages
The most popular and easy to use
The first obvious advantage of these washers is that they are known to everyone. Who hasn't had to use this type of washer at least once in their life? They are familiar and therefore reassuring.
The accessibility of top-loading washers is reflected in their ease of use. A button to choose the water level, another for the water temperature, the largest for the cycles, and you're good to go!
Are you the type of person who does only one type of laundry and doesn't like complications? Then this type of washer is for you.
Finally, if you're in a hurry by nature, know that the wash cycles of top-loading models are the fastest you'll find.
A more accessible price
"Accessibility" seems to be the adjective that best describes this type of appliance because it also applies to their price. The cheapest washers in stores are all top-loading. The cheapest washers to repair are generally also top-loaders.
Traditional washers... and outdated?
Too much water consumption nowadays
Top-loading washers are the ones that have been around the longest... and evolve the least?
Even if real progress has been made with new hybrid high-efficiency models, the amount of water used is very high on older models, which are also the most common. Almost 100 liters of water per wash depending on the selected program for these! In an era where we pay attention to our consumption to avoid waste, these washers seem stuck in the past.
Paradoxically, the evolution of these washers brings them closer and closer to front-load models... More electronics, automatic water level control, even if energy efficiency remains lower than their rivals.
Laundry put to the test due to the agitator?
AgitatorThe agitator, the central part found in the tub, is also at the heart of many debates.
Does it really damage laundry? Yes... and no.
The answer to this question is not so simple and depends on several things: the shape of the agitator, how the laundry is placed in the tub, the type and quantity of laundry placed in the washer, etc.
Is there a clear winner in this opposition?
No, not really.
Budget, practicality, available space, and used cycles and options are all elements that will tip the balance one way or the other.
Ultimately, the most important thing is to listen to your needs and adequately choose your future washing machine.
